Solar Roof OEM Module Design: Technical Requirements Before Manufacturing
For an integrated solar roof product, electrical output is only one part of the specification. The photovoltaic module must fit the dimensions, installation interface, appearance and service conditions of the roofing system. A good technical brief lets the roofing manufacturer and module partner evaluate feasibility before prototype investment.
1. Define the Roofing Application
Start with a sketch of the full roof assembly. Identify whether the photovoltaic module replaces a weatherproof roof element or is mounted above a separate waterproof layer. The roofing system developer remains responsible for overall weather protection, structure and installation requirements; module-level electrical and mechanical qualification is a distinct scope.
2. Specify Module Dimensions and Tolerances
Provide the module’s maximum length, width and thickness, any overlap zones, allowable tolerances and the exact mounting/support points. Also show adjacent parts and space available behind the module. External size alone does not determine feasibility: cell geometry, insulation clearances, internal wiring and edge construction all matter.
3. Evaluate Glass and Material Construction
State the intended glass-glass configuration, glass treatment, appearance and edge details. Encapsulation options such as POE or EVA and potential edge sealing solutions should be reviewed together with the whole construction. A preferred material by itself is not proof of module durability; compatibility and validation are design-specific.
4. Define Cell Technology and Layout
Back-contact (BC) cell technology may support a cleaner visible face; TOPCon is another candidate. Compare available cell sizes, series connections, target voltage and current, visual requirements, supply availability and manufacturing feasibility. The highest nominal cell efficiency does not automatically yield the best complete roofing product.
5. Provide Electrical and Junction Box Requirements
Document target power range, operating voltage/current, maximum system voltage, shading scenarios and power-electronics compatibility. Specify junction box position, rear clearance, cable routing, net cable length, cross-section and connector system. Connector compatibility should be verified rather than inferred from a similar appearance.
6. Establish Verification and Responsibilities
Define intended sales markets and applicable PV-module and building-system requirements early. Relevant standards may include IEC 61215, IEC 61730 and the IEC 63092 BIPV series, depending on the product and jurisdiction. Qualification of an existing module design should not be assumed to cover every size or material variation.
7. Prepare the Initial RFQ Package
- Application overview and assembly/drawing
- Module external dimensions and mechanical tolerances
- Glass and aesthetic requirements
- Preferred cell format and target electrical characteristics
- Junction box, cable and connector details
- Estimated prototype and production quantities
- Target market and proposed validation scope
Preliminary requirements are sufficient for an initial feasibility discussion. Confidential drawings may be exchanged later under an appropriate NDA.
